Young at Heart: Tips for Seniors on Heart Health and Healthy Aging
Growing older is a gift, even if it brings about some changes. Effectively managing those changes is at the root of what it means to age healthfully, and good heart health is an essential component!
Maintaining good heart health plays a vital role in the overall well-being of seniors, especially those in assisted living facilities. A healthy heart supports better energy, mobility, and independence—key ingredients for enjoying life to the fullest, no matter your age.
At Sobe Rehab, we’re to help seniors improve their heart health in a way that works for their needs. To learn more, give us a call today.
Three Ways Seniors Can Boost Their Heart Health
1. Stay physically active with an exercise routine that works for you.
The link between physical activity and improved cardiovascular health isn’t a secret. Still, many seniors may struggle to find a way to get active if they have limited strength, balance, or mobility. However, with some guidance and modifications, you can find a way to move regularly without overexerting yourself. Here are some ideas:
• Try chair exercises. Seated movements like leg lifts or arm circles provide the benefits of exercise without the risk of a fall.
• For seniors with more mobility, make time for a short stroll every day. Consider starting a walking club so you can also get some social time in, another key component of healthy aging!
• Water aerobics is another exercise option that’s easy on the joints and excellent for heart health.
2. Find effective ways to manage your stress levels.
As you age, your heart may struggle more during stressful times, so it’s important to find ways to manage stress effectively. Several relaxation and mindfulness techniques are simple to perform and can make a big difference, especially if you incorporate them into your daily routine.
Here are some of our favorite methods to reduce stress:
• Choose a relaxing hobby, such as knitting, painting, or working on puzzles, and carve out time for it each day. These activities also help keep your mind sharp!
• Mindfulness is the practice of focusing on the present moment to quiet anxious thoughts. It can be as easy as focusing your attention on what you’re currently doing–whether tidying your living space, reading a book, or talking with a friend.
• Deep breathing exercises can be helpful in moments when you feel heightened stress. Inhale deeply through your nose, hold for a moment, and exhale slowly.
3. Don’t skip out on quality sleep
A good night’s sleep is essential for maintaining heart health, as it allows your heart to rest and recover. Unfortunately, many seniors struggle to get enough sleep due to pain, medications, or sleep disorders (which are often more prevalent in older adults).
It’s important that you take steps to create a sleep-friendly environment. Here are some tips:
• Keep your bedroom quiet and dimly lit. Make sure your bed is comfortable and move clocks out of view, as they can sometimes trigger insomnia.
• Avoid exposure to artificial light as much as possible an hour before bed. Use low-wattage light bulbs if safe, and avoid watching TV or reading on a backlit screen.
• Maintain a regular sleep schedule with soothing bedtime rituals, like a nice bath or some of the breathing and mindfulness exercises explored above.

February is Heart Health Month
When’s the last time you thought about your heart health? February is heart health month, so there’s no better time to give one of your most essential organs the attention it deserves.
According to the National Library of Medicine, an estimated 16.3 million Americans aged 20 and older have coronary heart disease (CHD). The symptoms of CHD include heart attacks and chest pain. In the United States, 7.9 million individuals have suffered from heart attacks, and 9 million have experienced chest pain.
These statistics can be alarming, but rest assured that there are several ways you can help improve your heart health! The therapists at Sobe Rehab have put together a list of manageable lifestyle changes you can make as soon as today to ensure good heart health for years to come.
1. Exercise regularly
Regular physical activity can help you gain muscle strength and endurance. Exercise helps your cardiovascular system work more efficiently by delivering oxygen and nutrients to your tissues.
If you are not currently exercising regularly, start by taking a ten-minute walk around your neighborhood each day. From there, increase the amount of time you walk each day and quicken your pace. You will eventually be able to work up to a more strenuous activity, like running or biking.
2. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables
According to a study published in the International Journal of Epidemiology, eating ten servings of fruits and vegetables a day can lower your risk of cardiovascular disease by 28% and premature death by 31%.
Ten servings may sound like a lot, but remember that there are many ways to up your fruit and veggie intake. You could add fruit to your water, add vegetables to your fruit smoothie, and snack on carrots and hummus during the day instead of chips.
3. Manage your stress
Did you know that there are over 1,400 biochemical responses to stress? Some of these include a rise in blood pressure and a faster heart rate. For these reasons, stress can have long-term adverse effects on your health.
Try to take the time out of your day to practice mindfulness and check in with your body. Deep breathing activities and meditation can do wonders for anxiety. Practicing yoga may also help you decrease your stress levels.

Love Your Heart This Valentine’s Day
This month, we’re celebrating our two favorite heart-centric holidays: Valentine’s Day and National Heart Month! We thought we’d combine the two celebrations by sharing four heart-friendly ways you and your loved ones can revel in all things love and romance.
1. Dance to Romantic Music
• Dancing is just moving your body to music–and you can do it seated or standing! Put on your favorite romantic tunes and find your rhythm. It’s a wonderful way to raise your heart rate, enjoy some laughs, and connect with friends.
2. Take a Walk With Your Valentine
• Walking is excellent for circulation and heart health–and it’s even better when shared with a companion. Take a stroll through your facility’s courtyard or down decorated hallways.
3. Share Some Heart-Healthy Treats
• High-quality dark chocolate and fruits like strawberries and raspberries are healthy, sweet, and festive for the season.
4. Make Valentine’s Day Cards
• Crafting cards for your friends, family, and other loved ones is a wonderful way to celebrate Valentine’s Day–and creative activities like cardmaking can help with relaxation and stress management, which benefits your heart.
This Valentine’s Day, celebrate love and health together. If you or a loved one is looking for creative ways to boost heart health, schedule a session with the Sobe Rehab team at your assisted living facility.
Together, let’s keep your heart happy and strong!
