Celebrating Falls Prevention Awareness Month
For older adults, a single fall can have a significant impact, affecting everything from daily activities to overall quality of life. This is especially true in assisted living facilities, where fall prevention becomes a responsibility shared across the entire community.
With September being Falls Prevention Awareness Month, now’s a great time for ALF staff to take a closer look at the everyday factors that influence resident safety. From recognizing changes in residents’ walking patterns to keeping pathways clear, you can play an important role in identifying risks before they lead to an injury.
Sobe Rehab’s S.A.F.E.R. Fall Prevention Program adds another layer of support as well. Our dedicated fall-prevention specialists partner with ALF communities to identify concerns early, educate residents and staff, and promote safer movement throughout the day.
Why Fall Prevention Starts Before the First Fall
Many residents show early signs of increased fall risk before experiencing their first fall. Walking more slowly, reaching for furniture, or avoiding activities they previously enjoyed can all indicate a change in mobility that might need extra attention. This is why our fall prevention program always starts with a detailed fall-risk screen to identify residents most at risk for a fall and who may benefit from additional support.
That said, prevention works best when the care team considers the resident as a whole. Early identification allows your facility’s care team to respond before a problem becomes more limiting.

How ALF Staff Can Help Reduce Fall Risk
Staff members see residents during meals, activities, personal care, and everyday movement. Those interactions can reveal important changes that may not appear during a single assessment.
A few practices can make a meaningful difference:
Report changes in mobility.
Has a resident started shuffling when they walk? Do they have difficulty transferring, or do they seem more reliant on furniture to get around? These are all potential signs that deserve attention.
Keep pathways clear throughout the facility.
Watch for cords, clutter, loose rugs, poorly positioned furniture, and other tripping hazards.
Check lighting.
Adequate lighting is especially important along frequently traveled routes, including paths to bathrooms.
Pay attention to residents’ footwear.
Loose, poorly fitting, or slippery footwear can make safe movement more difficult.
Encourage proper use of mobility devices.
Walkers and canes work best when appropriately fitted and used correctly. Our team can assess whether mobility devices are properly fitted and provide education on their safe use.
Communicate after a near fall.
A resident doesn’t have to hit the floor for an event to provide useful information. A stumble or sudden loss of balance may indicate an emerging risk.
Encourage safe activity.
Fear of falling can lead residents to move less. Over time, inactivity can contribute to weakness and reduced mobility.
A S.A.F.E.R. Approach to Fall Prevention
At Sobe Rehab, we know that fall prevention can be overwhelming for ALF staff. That’s why our S.A.F.E.R. Fall Prevention Program gives ALF teams a structured approach to identifying risks, responding to falls, and improving resident safety. The program starts by screening residents for fall risk through detailed, proactive assessments. If a fall occurs, the team reviews the incident to identify contributing factors and strengthen documentation.
From there, we provide immediate physical, occupational, and speech therapy care as needed to support recovery and address factors that may contribute to another incident. The program also educates ALF staff on safe transfers, resident supervision, and practical prevention strategies. Finally, ongoing monitoring helps identify emerging concerns and supports ongoing fall-prevention efforts to reduce fall risk across the community.
All in all, the program offers more clinical support and a more consistent prevention process, helping ALF staff recognize concerns earlier and reinforce safer practices so residents remain safer and more independent in their daily activities.
Make Fall Prevention a Team Effort
Preventing falls isn’t the job of one department. It takes communication between residents, families, ALF staff, fall prevention specialists, therapists, and other healthcare providers.
Falls Prevention Awareness Month is a valuable reminder to turn that teamwork into daily action. Notice changes. Share concerns. Address hazards. Even seemingly minor observations can lead to earlier intervention and safer choices.
And if you’re hoping to strengthen fall prevention efforts in your community, contact Sobe Rehab to learn how our fall prevention specialists and rehabilitation team can partner with your ALF to support safer mobility, greater confidence, and continued resident independence.

Preventing falls starts with understanding how a resident moves, which is why the first step in our S.A.F.E.R. Fall Prevention Program is to screen residents for potential fall risk. We do this through the Tinetti Performance-Oriented Mobility Assessment (POMA), which evaluates balance and walking ability to help identify mobility concerns that may require additional attention.
What Does the Tinetti Assessment Measure?
The Tinetti assessment is a standardized clinical test commonly used with older adults. It evaluates both balance and gait, which are two major areas of mobility.
Evaluating Balance
During the balance portion, our fall prevention specialist observes tasks such as:
- Rising from and sitting down in a chair
- Maintaining balance while standing
- Turning 360 degrees
- Responding to a gentle nudge while maintaining balance
- Standing with the eyes closed
Evaluating Walking
The walking portion examines how a resident starts walking, as well as factors like:
- Step length
- Height
- Symmetry
- Continuity
- Body position
- Walking path
Putting It all Together
The full assessment then produces a score that helps quantify balance and gait performance, providing ALF staff and clinicians with objective information about which residents may benefit from additional evaluation or fall-prevention strategies.
The Tinetti assessment can also help ALF staff:
- Recognize balance or walking difficulties
- Track mobility changes over time
- Determine when further clinical evaluation may be appropriate
- Guide strategies addressing strength, balance, walking, transfers, or environmental safety

Why Your Body Feels Different in Fall
Shorter Days Can Affect More Than Your Mood
When the days get shorter and darker, many people notice they feel heavier, more tired, or more achy. This is not just in your head. Less sunlight can affect your mood, your sleep, and even how much pain you feel. Research suggests that lower light levels may increase pain sensitivity, making seasonal changes something your body can genuinely notice.
☀️ Tip of the Month
Try to get outside in natural light in the morning, even on cloudy days. Morning light helps your body set its internal clock, which can support better mood, sleep, and pain management as the days become shorter.
Exercise Tip of the Month
Double Knees to Chest
Start on your back with your knees bent. Slowly bring both knees toward your chest and gently grasp your knees.
Hold the stretch for 30 seconds, then slowly return your legs to the starting position.
Complete 1 set of 3 repetitions, moving slowly and comfortably throughout the exercise.
Today’s Exercise Tracker
Complete all 3 repetitions to finish today’s set.
